Dental Insurance Ignores Inflation

Cost of dental insurance then

Did you know that in the 1960's the maximum pay out amount for most dental insurance plans was $1000.00?

Cost of dental insurance now

Can you guess what the maximum is for many people today?

If dental insurance plans were to increase their maximums along with the inflation rates each year, patients would be rolling in the dental care.  Annual maximums would be between $7,000.00 and $10,000.00.  With increased awareness about dental disease and overall systemic disease, imagine the good that would do!

To give you an idea of what $1000.00 in dental benefits would purchase, consider these figures.

In New York state, the average cost of a crown is about $1000.00, a dental cleaning about $100.00, a dental filling $180.00, wisdom tooth extraction $200.00-$400.00 per tooth...you get the idea.

How I can save money on dental insurance

Fortunately, when you go to a dental office which is IN NETWORK/PARTICIPATING with the insurance company, you get discounted rates for those procedures.  So the $1000.00 crown, becomes $700.00, the cleaning becomes $70.00 and so on.  These are just figures to give you a simple understanding of what you or your employer get with what premium is paid.

Choosing a plan

Keep in mind the following when choosing a plan:

  • What is the annual maximum?
  • What limitations do they place on the treatment that could be covered?
  • What am I spending vs. what am I getting?
